Hail, gods and goddesses! I’m Ares, a 4.5-year-old English Bulldog. I came to CEBR as an owner surrender when my medical care became too much, and I’m already a whole new dog!
I was a bit of a mess when I arrived, but most of my medical issues are now resolved and other than dry eye, I won’t require long-term care. I am very good while getting my eye drops! After breakfast I sit nicely while my foster mom cleans my face and puts drops in my eyes. It makes my eyes feel better and I get a great and cuddles after!
Despite my name, I’m a peaceful guy—unless the vacuum is around, then the war is on! I know most commands, listen well, and am learning from my foster family. I get along with my foster brothers, respecting my sometimes-crabby bulldog brother’s boundaries and playing tug and chase with the puppy. I politely let the puppy know when I’ve had enough, though my foster mom sometimes has to help since he is still learning his manners.
My foster mom says I’m a sweet boy who loves being close to people. I’m working on feeling comfortable when I can’t be with everyone and may get vocal if I don’t get to be in the same room as everyone else or want a toy. At bedtime, though, I’m a star! I’m kennel trained, sleep through the night, and love having my own safe room. I’m happy snoozing near people and dogs, but cuddling on the couch is even better!
I’m a great eater, though I like to check everyone else’s bowl for leftovers. With a reminder, I sit nicely until they’re done. I also love showers and jumping into the tub—I’ll happily drink and play in the water, and I’m even good about baths!
I love car rides and walks, and I’m learning not to pull when I get excited. I’m also quite the talker during play—sometimes a little loudly! I can get bossy when I want to play or share someone’s food, but I respond well to positive reinforcement and quickly adjust when my foster mom walks away.
Because of previously untreated medical issues, I didn’t have full bladder control when I arrived at CEBR. Now that I’m feeling better, I’m making good progress with housetraining but still need patience and consistency. I can also be vocal and bossy when I want something, so I’ll need continued guidance.
My ideal family will continue to work with me on my housetraining and my bossiness and help me continue to feel safe. I would love another dog friend but am also happy not sharing toys. I do better when I am active and engaged so would love to be able to go for short walks and play each day.
